【意味】我慢の限界
【ニュアンス解説】
ラクダの背中に大量の荷物を載せ、最後に載せたのがたとえとても軽い藁1本であったとしても、限界を超えた状態になればラクダの背骨が折れてしまう、という諺に由来すると言われています。
「我慢の限界」という意味のフレーズです。
【例文】
1. 態度の悪い従業員
A. I fired Mary yesterday.
<昨日メアリーをクビにしたんだ。>
B. Did you receive a complaint about her again?
<また彼女に対するクレームでもあったんですか?>
A. Yeah. She was always being rude to customers, and that was the last straw.
<ああ。いつもお客様に失礼だったけど、もう我慢の限界だよ。>
2. 我慢してきたけど
A. I don't want to pair up with Ben for this project.
<このプロジェクト、ベンと組みたくないな。>
B. Why not? I thought the two of you were good friends.
<どうして?あなたたち、仲が良いと思ってたけど。>
A. He embarrassed me at my wedding, and that was the last straw.
<僕の結婚式で、恥をかかされたんだ。もう我慢の限界だよ。>
ちょっと長いですが、元の諺を使用した the straw that broke the camel's back という言い方もあります。
